There's so much to learn about aging and preparing for it. When reflecting on what to do about the complexities of living alone and searching for ways to remain independent and strong, solutions and options are hard to find. Believe me when I say, I get it! I do. Because after caring for my parents, that's how it was for me. At the time, it would have been a welcomed relief to ask someone, living in a similar circumstance, a few questions. A single person without a family of their own who could guide me on living a healthy, engaged, and secure lifestyle alone.
No one showed up so, I did the next best thing. I set out to create a plan that would foster the kind of life I hoped to design for myself. One that kept me healthy and fit, to live in a place where peers and younger individuals were available, to have a socially engaging sense of community, to create a support system close by, and have easy access to transportation, shopping, medical facilities, and good health care. And finally, to have enough money to support all that and outlast me.
That's where I am now! But it took lots of time (7 years,) great deal of effort and research, and tons of patience.
Ask Me Anything about Aging Alone The series will be a monthly (or so) online event that meets via a Zoom call. A short presentation highlighting our top concerns and what can be done about them. Then the call opens up for your questions. The most popular subject matter that single seniors want to have and need answers for are:
Meet new people and stay engaged
Create a sense of family and support
Take care of practical stuff | Legal matters
Money to outlive them
Affordable living arrangements
Build self reliance
Be positive about growing older
Solo Aging Advice I've done the research on most senior-related issues since 2006. In those fifteen years, I've lived them, helped others with them, written about them, was interviewed on them, gave presentations and speeches addressing them, created a YouTube channel around them, started a Facebook group to discuss them, and lead multiple discussions about them for AMAVA, Covia (Front Porch,) several Lifelong Learning Institutes' online classes and groups, Life Plan Senior Communities, housing and active adults apartments. And most recently, wrote a book, SOLO and SMART, that talks about how I dealt with them. The book, SOLO and SMART, will be published in 2022. I'll keep you posted.
