Why a Roadmap is Needed

Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement (2022,) a groundbreaking study of more than 11,000 North American adults, largely pre-retirees and retirees, report by Edward Jones and AgeWave, explores retirement—people’s experience in retirement, and the keys to thriving.

The Key Elements of Today's Retirees:
  • Value of longevity—29 years to be the length of retirement.
  • Pandemic drove transition, to organize time, and find new purpose.
  • Preparation and financial foresight is central.

Other elements include:
  1. Attend to health.
  2. Stay socially engaged.
  3. Gain a sense of purpose.
  4. Manage finances and keep on track.
  5. Be willing to course correct again and again to achieve dreams.

Plotting a rewarding path is key to living longer, independently, and securely. That path requires good health, affordable housing, social connections, spiritual soundness, a strong support network, a fulfilling purpose, enough money, and tending to legal matters.

A WELL-PLOTTED ROADMAP GUIDES PRE-RETIREES

Where I am right now?

Where do I want to be?

How will I get there?

Assess the satisfaction for each domain—identify where one falls short and excels—lessens risk and strengthens stability.
Learn the elements that  influence each domain. Know all the options and ways to improve the risks.
Produce an easy to deploy plan of action, one that gives clear directives—leading to a stronger and secure future.

If they are isolated and lonely—how to increase social engagement,

If they have nearby help and support,

If their local community has proper resources,

If they're prepared financially for emergencies,

If they are organized and their legal matters are well documented,

If they have a strong spiritual connection, and

"As a Certified Senior Advisor specialist on aging, the Solo and Smart book is an excellent guide and roadmap with checklists that helps a person continue to grow as they get older and live longer.

A client once asked me, “I am 90 and by myself, and I don’t know how to be 90. How do I be 90?” I wish I had this book to recommend back then. It would have helped her be ready and prepared for solo living from ages 50 to 90-plus. The book is based on the real-life experiences of one who cared for older relatives and then, faced aging alone.

Living solo at a younger life stage is quite different from an older person living in this age which requires a person to be  intentional and strategic. Today, people 50 and over need strategies that equip them to move beyond surviving into thriving. You will also need to know and understand what is happening to your mind, body, and spirit and what to expect.

As a Certified Retirement Life Coach people know what they are retiring from but not always what they are retiring into. The key transition is to deal with all phases of aging—young old, to middle old, old and old and if lucky, super-ager status.

Unfortunately, most fumble and stumble after retirement as they face the rewards and challenges. The biggest fumble is getting old. This book helps you turn aging-related stumbling blocks into stepping stones—and living a favorable whole-person centric life. As a Certified Pet Chaplain, I was pleased to see sections on spirituality and pet companion care. This is the cherry on top for me. As we age, these aspects become critical, adding comfort to your peace of mind, heart, and spirit."  Bob Coulson, Certified Senior Advisor, Retirement Options, Certified Coach, and Pet Chaplain.
